What are Mommy Blogs For Anyway?

I am beginning to wonder what the purpose of mommy blogs are. Is it merely intrinsic in that we are able to shed layers of our mommy selves and negotiate who we are as mothers for our own purview? Surely there must be some extrinsic value to posting our ramblings to others (known and unknown readers) to see.

If not for readers, why do we not confine our posts to private journals?

I am beginning to wonder how exactly I am going to combine my personal reflections on being a mom (based on my own experience with B1, B2 and DOAD) and my "findings" (analysis, narratives and questions, reflections from) the Mothering Contexts Study

Honestly, I am not quite sure where and when the professional hat comes off and when -or how for that matter - the personal veneer disappears. Can it? Does it? Should it?

I would love to know what the 135 participants in my research feel about these and other questions concerning mothering and our lives in and outside of motherhood.

I would WELCOME feedback from my readers on this. Please do share your thoughts here.

DOAD and I went to see a movie tonight, Julie and Julia, a movie based on a book Julie Powell wrote, based on a blog that my book club read a couple years ago. It really has got me thinking about this sharing of information that occurs on (all but mostly) mommy blog sites.

So, readers .. if you are out there PLEASE SHARE WITH ME your ideas about what you think a mommy blog is for; and in particular, a blog with two contradictory purposes - to ponder my personal and to ponder my professional and all the while attempt to deal with the political!!

And... this is my 100th post! What, really, have I said in 100 posts? Moreover, does it matter more than I said (wrote) it or that someone (presumably) read it?

Hi, where do you want me to put this?

For me, my blog is used as a place to capture the kids milestones, their funny conversation, and share parenting tips.

It's a place to capture vacation moments, celebrations, or just photos of the kids growing.

Thanks, Zara! Does it matter if you never find out if the parenting tips that you have "shared" are read, used or followed?

I think the beauty of these blogs is that you feel like someone understands the experience of being a mom, or alternatively, provides their own account that might be different and offer some insight into another aspect of being a mom. You don't feel so alone, because sometimes, being a mom is rather isolating. Sometimes it feels like we are all so darn busy we don't even have time to talk about mothering, or parenting or even how we juggle our own work and parenting.

Your blog is also inspiring. I signed up for a, gulp, writing course called the Momoir Project (they have a website with great blog entries too). It makes people stop and reflect. I think your blog could be seen as a bit of social activism too. Maybe your blog is affecting women in that they might do something or think about mothering differently. Isn't that a form of activism? I signed up for the momoir writing project because of you. It has made me think about my mothering differently, maybe do it differently. I see your research is a form of social activism.

Lori, and mommy friends,

Thanks for these empowering comments. What a compliment that anyone would find this blog inspiring. I just want to get mothers engaged and it looks like this is starting! Wow!

There are likely other moms who would be interested in pursuing the Momoir Project (I LOVE that idea!). Can you post a link here please?

Isn't it amazing how a couple hours (or even a few moments) meeting someone can alter "stuff" thereafter. Please know it definitely goes both ways!

Interesting question.

I have two blogs - a 'private' one that is invite only and a 'public' one. The private one is for family updates/pictures of the kids - for far flung family and friends. I write whatever I want in that one.

The public one is mostly about food, with some anecdotal family stuff thrown in. This one is more carefully photographed and written - it is my 'public' face, and I use it to keep my writing skills up, and to connect with the local food community. There's some 'mom' stuff in there just because I bake with my 13 year old and eat and travel with my kids...but mostly it is a blog for me.

Whew, long answer to a short question.
